How often do you really think about the way you’re treating the drains throughout your home? It’s probably not at the forefront of your mind. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with some tips of what you need to keep out of your drains.
Kitchen
When it comes to your kitchen, the drain you have to be aware of is your garbage disposal. It’s easy to think that you can toss any of your leftover food scraps down that drain, but be wary of that. There are several types of food items that you should never throw in the disposal here are a few of them:
Fats, Grease, and Oil - Over time, these substances stick to the sides of your pipes and cause clogs. The most common types of foods that create these clogs include melted butter, olive oil, cream, and the grease from cooked meat like bacon.
Coffee Grounds, Egg Shells, and Other Food Products - What harm could coffee grounds do? They’re tiny, but it’s that small size that allows them to get caught in all of the curves and grooves of your pipes. If you compound the grounds with any fats, oils, and grease and you’ve got a massive clog on your hands.
Chemical Drain Clearing Agents - No matter which drains you’re trying to clear out, always avoid using chemical drain cleaners. They might seem like the simple solution, but we promise, they’ll cause more problems than they’re worth.
Bathroom
In your bathroom, there are a few different drains to think about, and they all require different types of care.
Shower/Sink - The main culprit of shower and sink drains is hair. One way you can avoid this is by putting a mesh drain cover over the drain. The mesh will catch all of the hair while still allowing water to filter through.
Toilet - The only type of material that belongs in your toilet is toilet paper! Your kids might be tempted to toss a rubber ducky in there, but avoid that as much as possible. Even “flushable wipes” can cause harm to your plumbing system. They don’t dissolve the way that toilet paper does and will cause a nasty blockage.
